The owners of the b&b are really lovely and their rooms are spotless. However on a recent visit, the ensuite toilet wasn’t flushed and there was urine and toilet tissue in the bowl. I didn’t have the heart to let the owners know, so I just flushed it. Since I’ve been watching hotel programmes, I wonder if I should have complained?

If the flush was not working you might have had something to complain about. (LOL when I think of some of the hotels I’ve stayed in on my travels).
But as you were not in the Third World it should have been flushed – given that it was not you could reasonably ask if the bathroom has been properly cleaned. Most hotels would not mind you’re drawing it to their attention.

You should have complained. It’s possible to give a polite complaint, it doesn’t mean that you are mad at them or anything. You are just letting them know so their housekeeping staff can be informed that they missed a bathroom or the toilet. That’s the only way they can improve is from feedback.

No. Why would you complain about that?! Obviously another guest left it like that not the owners. Also there are some people who think they shouldn’t flush if they only pee…to save water. I am not one of those people. However I would have just closed the lid, flushed, and then used it and flushed and NOT complained to anyone.
Don’t go to a B and B if you can’t handle sharing a bathroom with strangers.
